Summer 09- THANK YOU!
Last Friday night we hosted our sailing graduation to recognize the hard work of our sailors here at WDYC. It's hard to believe that the program has come to and end and eight weeks went by so quickly. A BIG thank you to everyone who made this summer so successful. To all of the parents who were so supportive, thank you for your help! A big thank you to the race team parents who not only assisted with regatta travel but trailered and towed boats for us. Also, to the parents who donated snacks and waters for each event, you kept our sailors energized and bringing home the hardware.
To Mrs. Galanis THANK YOU for working so hard on the end of the year sailing video! It came out great and we really appreciated you putting it together and mailing it from Florida. The pictures and music wrapped up the season and lead us down a trail of unforgettable summer memories.
One last big thank you to the instructors who worked so hard this summer to ensure the success of the program. Ali Love, Brooke Baker, DJ Hatch, Mildred Conroy and Patrick Hession (our senior staff) and to our junior instructors Lauren Galanis, Chris Warner, Marissa Sullivan, Kelsey Goggin, Brett Baker, Ryan Daly, Laura Adams, Erin Daly, Caroline Boland, Rob Blake and Patrick Watson you were all a pleasure to work with!
Also, to Mr. and Mrs. Goggin thank you for your dedication to the program this summer. You went above and beyond to guarentee that everything ran smoothly. You worked tirelessly behind the scenes and we greatly appreciate all of your efforts on behalf of the program. THANK YOU!
Best of luck to all of our sailors as they head back to school this Fall. We are already planning for next season and are looking forward to your return :-)

SMART Clinic
SMSA Parents, Sailors, and Coaches:
We're hosting a late August SMART training session in Hyannis at Hyannis Yacht Club. This should be an excellent opportunity for exposure to some excellent coaching: I'm hoping to add Skip Whyte to our coaching roster for this event. Skip has many years of coaching the best sailors in the United States, including the US Olympic 470 team and LISOT's 420 Program. We'll need 7 boats minimum to add Skip, so please try to get your boat there for the weekend.
The focus for this weekend will be tuning and technique for speed, though we'll actually devote a little more focus to starting drills than we have in the past; this has been a consistent area for improvement.
The schedule for the weekend is:
Saturday 8/29
8:00 AM Report Time
9:00 AM Rigged and Ready for team meeting
9:45 AM On the Water
12:00 PM Lunch on the Water
5:00 PM Pick Up.
Sunday 8/30
8:00 AM Report Time
8:45 AM Team Meeting
12:00 PM Lunch on the Water
4:30 PM Team meeting and Pack-Up
The fee will be $200 per boat.
If you are interested in sailing, please email me to sign up for the clinic. It should be an excellent one, and a good way to transition toward the major national scale events this winter.

SMSA STANDINGS
The SMSA 420 Grand Prix Championship was organized in 1986 to encourage competition amongst the junior sailors of Southern Massachusetts in the Club 420. The SMSA C420 Grand Prix standings take the highest cumulative score from eight regattas and averages them into a final standing. This year the WDYC race team respectfully represented our club at New Bedford, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, Hyannis and Beverly. Congratulations to our racers who had an AWESOME season :-) Coach Mildred is already looking forward to next season and having the team back for another successful summer of racing!

Week 8 ALREADY?!
It's hard to believe we are in WEEK 8 here at WDYC! It was a crazy Monday as Harry Potter week kicked off with sailing quidditch throughout the classes. There were smiles all around as our sailors tried to find the golden snitch. Sailing quidditch will continue throughout the week and we will keep you posted on which house wins!This Friday sailing graduation will be held at 7:00 p.m. All sailors who participated in the sailing school are invited to attend with their family for one last night of sailing memories at WDYC.
A big congratulations to all of the sailors who participated in the Sullivan-Hamel and Halpern-Reiss cup race on Sunday!! Way to go :-)

Harry Potter Week at WDYC

Sullivan/Hamel Opti and Halpern-Reiss 420 CUP RACES!
The Sullivan/Hamel Opti and Halpern-Reiss 420 Cup Races will take place this Sunday (8/16) and all sailing school students are encouraged to race! Sailors are to have their boats rigged by 10 am for the skippers meeting so we can start heading out to the race course shortly after. If you are unsure if your child is ready to race, ask their instructor. This is a great opportunity for our new racers to get out there on the course!

Thursday morning is the Hyannisport YC Opti Invite, please sign up outside the sailing office if you are attending. So far we have: Eddie, Brad, Matthew, Shamus, Sebastian racing.
Registration 8:00 – 9:00
Skippers Meeting: 9:00 Red, Blue and White Fleets
Skipper’s Meeting: 9:15 Green Fleet
Lunch will be provided on land at mid-day.
Races will recommence after lunch.

Thursday and Friday are Pirate Day,
Time for fun, time for play.
Come dressed in your best pirate gear,
This will be the best day of the year.
You'll follow the riddles and look for a clue, at the end will be a prize for you.
Appropriate Pirate Attire: bandanas, vests, face paint, eye patches, earrings, etc.

CONGRATS TO SEBASTIAN!!
Sebastian Halpern-Reiss spent the last four days racing at Opti New England's in Newport, RI. We are so proud of him for representing WDYC at an event where 323 opti's raced! He did an AWESOME job especially after racing in regattas for 9 straight days (Wianno, Hyannis, Opti New Englands). Way to go Sea-Bass!

Beverly Plan
The 420-A team will be loading the boats onto the trailer tomorrow at 4:00 after practice. They will be departing for Beverly on Monday to rig and have a short practice with the Tabor team. They will report to WDYC at 6:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. We will keep you posted on the results!

Greenie's have a great day at Barnstable!
Alexis, Carly, Chloe, Eddie, Jake, Joe and Noah all participated in the green fleet regatta hosted by the Barnstable Yacht Club yesterday. With light breeze in the morning the sailors had a hard time getting out, but as it picked up in the afternoon they ran six races total.
Overall the kids had a blast and represented WDYC proudly. A big congrats to all of our racers and thank you to Mr. Rea for the pictures and Mrs. Banks for the snacks and water!
Way to go WDYC green fleet! Keep up the good work.

HYC Regatta Results
Over the weekend we had four WDYC 420's and two opti's participate in the three day Hyannis Yacht Club regatta. They raced against sailors from all over the world and it was one amazing event. With winds gusting to 30 on Friday, the teams held on and battled the intense breeze. They had a break on Saturday as conditions brought light winds gusting to 3. Postponement held off the races for an hour but our sailors stayed focused and were ready when the flag came down. Sunday evened the first two days out and blew a steady 15 all day. Our racers had a great experience sailing in an open fleet regatta and a big congratulations for working so hard!
Way to go: Ryan Daly, Laura Adams, Chris Warner Marissa Sullivan, Andrew Warner, Kelsey Goggin, Max Dowgiallo, Julia Donahue, Shamus Sullivan and Sebastian Halpern-Reiss.

Yarmouth Invitational and Belle of the West
This Wednesday we are sending three boats to the Yarmouth Sailing Invitational.

*Registration forms are in the office and need to be back to Meghan by 12:30 on Tuesday*
We are towing the boats over on Tuesday afternoon at 12:30. Tuesday morning sailors must report to WDYC at 7:30. Ali and Maureen will be driving. Check in is from 7:45-9:00 and the first gun is at 10:00.
Immediately after racing on Wednesday the boats will be put on the trailer and brought over to the Dennis Yacht Club. The sailors will go over to Dennis at this time to unload the trailer and get them ready for racing on Friday (so you can enjoy the JYC trip to Nantucket on Thursday!)
All 420-B racers must report to WDYC at 7:25 on Friday morning. Ali and Mrs. Gaglione will be driving over to Belle of the West.
Check in: 8:00
Skippers Meeting: 9:00
Last starting sequence: 2:30
After racing on Friday, the boats will be loaded onto the trailer and brought back to WDYC. All 420-B racers must report to WDYC on Sunday night at 4:30 to unload the trailer so the boats are ready to go for class on Monday morning (just think of all the hands you will have with Sunday night cook-out going on!)
