WDYC Sailing 2011

The WDYC Sailing Program will begin on Monday, June 27th. Please see the class descriptions below. The WDYC Invitational is on Monday, July 11th. There will be no classes on this day. There will be classes on Monday, July 4th


2011 Class Descriptions
Sea-Squirts: offers children ages 5 to 7 years old. These sailors will focus on the basics of sailing safety on the water. They will gain their sailing confidence and comfort in prams and the CC Knockabout.
  
Beginner Opti: This class is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 11.  This  introductory class focuses on rigging, parts of the boat, point of sail, right of way and sailing safety on the water.

Intermediate Opti: Offered for sailors who have successfully completed beginner opti and have been recommended for intermediate. They focus on independent sailing, points of sail, right of way, wind direction and sailing a triangle. Intermediate sailors MUST own their own Optimist Pram to participate in class.

Intro to Opti Racing: This class is for new opti racers. These sailors will be green fleet. They will be introduced to the basic concepts of Racing.

New Intro to Opti Racing: This class is for new opti racers. These sailors will be green fleet. They will be introduced to the basic concepts of Racing. Must Take intro. before race team A or B.

Opti Race B: Returning race team members who will focus on sharpening their boat handling and race tactics. They will work on the racing rules and course sailing. All Sailors MUST be white, blue or red fleet.

Opti Race A: Sailors who are recommended to the A team. These sailors will competitively race and attend regattas recommended by the sailing director. These sailors MUST be white, blue or red fleet.

420 Beginner: For older children at least 12 years old who will sail mainly 420s.  This class will cover the basics to sailing along with skippering, crewing, knot tying, rigging, basic rules of ways, and safety.

 Intermediate 420: This course builds on what sailors have learned in the Optimist groups and 420 Beginner group. Sailors will sharpen their skills with advanced drills and enhance their knowledge of right of way rules, spinnaker/trapeze, and navigation.

New Cruising: This class is designed for sailors who are not interested in racing. And have finished 2 full seasons of WDYCSS program. Sailors must be 10 years old. This class focus on weather, tides, current, basic navigation and rules of the road on the water

New Intro 420 racing: This class is for sailors that have successfully completed the Opti Race Program and are new to 420 racing. The class will begin with rigging and move quickly to 420 racing tactics.

420 Race B: This team is for sailors who have been recommended to participate in the 420 race program. The class is limited to 8 sailors and will attend local regattas.

420 Race A: This competitive team will be required to attend all practice and regattas. This team requires the necessary dedication to travel and race all summer long.
