Congratulations to Opti Green Fleet sailor CJ McKenna for his 1st place finish! (with a total of 6 points for the day!)

During the last race of the day on the 420 line, the wind really picked up and boats were beginning to flip over. Coach Chris approached a 420 from another yacht club as he heard them calling for help. The crew was caught underneith the boat.Chris immediately jumped off of the coach boat to rescue her and free her from the capsized boat. Way to go Chris :)

Beverly Jr. Regatta Recap

On Tuesday and Wednesday the 420-Race Team and Opti Race Team traveled to Beverly Jr. Regatta (the last SMSA event of the summer). The 420's performed well in a competitive fleet and had some top 10 finishes at the regatta. The conditions were light the first day but picked up for the second day. Congratulations to Andrew Warner/Brian Daley, Brad Seferian/Katie Galanis, Max Seferian/ Mike Sweeney, Sebastian Halpern-Reiss, Ed Goggin, Jake Hawk and Matthew Sweeney. Green fleet sailor CJ McKenna participated in the Chatham two-day regatta this past weekend. He had five 1st place finishes, one 2nd place finish and two 4th place finishes. Very impressive for a first year racer! He finished with a total of 15 points to win in the green fleet. Way to go CJ! Thanks for representing WDYC :)

On Sunday, Kelsey Goggin and her dad Ed Goggin rode 30 miles from Wellesley to Sharon. It was raining heavily for the 1 hour and 25 minute ride, but they successfully crossed the finish line. They finished in the top third of their fleet. Way to Kels and Ed! We are so proud of you!

Beginner Opti- Week 6

On Tuesday, the Beginner Opti sailors were treated to freeze-pops as they sailed to the Galanis' house on the river. They practiced steering as they dodged the beach ball from the instructors. On Wednesday, the Beginner Opti sailors successfully sailed all the way to the ocean! They were focusing on downwind sailing and recognizing low-tides while sailing out of the river. They only had 2 kids per boat and they have been use to sailing with 3-4 in a boat. Way to go Beginner Opti :)

Coach Brooke finishes 2nd in HYC Regatta!

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday Coach Brooke sailed with Mildred Conroy on the J-22 line at Hyannis Regatta. They competed against 10 boats and completed 8 races over the 3-days. They finished with 2 bullets throughout the regatta and finished in 2nd place overall. Way to go Brooke and Mildred!

Intro to Opti Race

On Tuesday in Intro to Opti Race they practiced tacking on the whistle. One whistle= tack. Two whistles= 360. Three whistles= safety position. Four whistles= capsize and re-right the boat. Coaches Kelsey and Laura are very impressed with the progress that these new racers have made this summer. Congratulations to Walter Sullivan who participated in the Hyannisport Green Fleet Regatta yesterday. Another congrats to CJ McKenna and Salty Walty for sailing in Wianno's regatta last week.

Intermediate Opti- Update

This week the intermediate opti class is focusing on upwind/downwind sailing. On Wednesday, they sailed all the way downwind to rock island, where they got off their boats and explored the ocean. They were on the look for Great White sharks as they have been avid Shark Week fans. They then beated upwind all the way back through the river to WDYC. The instructors were very proud that they didn't need to be towed once! Way to go :)

On Monday and Tuesday we sent twelve 420-sailors and 4 opti sailors to Scituate Jr. Regatta. Congratulations to our participants: Andrew Warner, Brian Daley, Erin Sullivan, Pat Watson, Brad Seferian, Mike Sweeney, Max Seferian, Katie Galanis, Alexis Hamel, Sean O'Sullivan, Caroline Bracken, Alex Sobchuck, Ed Goggin, Sebastian Halpern-Reiss, Jake Hawk and Matt Sweeney.

On Monday, WDYC sailor Matthew Sweeney was sailing in the fourth race of the regatta when his mast step malfunctioned. His finishes prior to the boat malfunction were: 1, 8, 1. He was in contention for placing in the regatta. He thought he was down and out for the rest of the regatta but thankfully a SHYC member came to the rescue. The young SHYC sailor brought her boat to the dock for Matthew where coach Brooke picked it up and towed it out to the race course. Matthew ended up finishing in 2nd place in the Red Fleet and his race finishes for day 2 were 1, 1, 6. He finished the regatta with a total of 18 points. Thank you SHYC!

A big thank you to Coach Brooke for hosting her Opti-A team with her aunt and uncle at their home in Scituate. The team had a blast playing wii, eatting ice cream sundaes and watching shark week at the end of each race day.

The 420- sailors were challenged with light, shifty breeze at Scituate. Even though there were difficult conditions, they still represented WDYC very well! A big congratulations to Andrew Warner and Brian Daley for finishing 3rd out of 37 boats. Max Seferian/Mike Sweeney and Brad Seferian/Katie Galanis had consistent top 10 finishes throughout the regatta. Way to go 420- race teams!

Our WDYC Sailors are headed off to Hyannis Yacht Club Regatta this weekend. The fleet has 100 boats and our sailors will be competing amongst the best sailors in the country. The registration for HYC shows that sailors from the following yacht clubs will be in attenance: Chicago YC, Annapolis YC, Houston YC, Coral Reef YC. There will be some intense competition! In addition to 420's HYC is hosting F-18's, J-22's and Lasers.

Beginner Opti- Week 4

On Monday/Thursday the Beginner Opti sailors were bound to land to due heavy winds. Thankfully, our creative instructors kept them busy with nautical flags, sailing songs and sailing gear/wear relay races. The relay races were hysterical as they dressed in lifejackets, sunglasses, hats and crocs. In the boys vs. girls races, they ran/huled to a Hawaiian girl and ran back.

During sailing on Tuesday/Wednesday they practiced capsizing, tacking and gybing. They are becoming more confident each day in the pram. Instructors Laura and Lauren are very impressed with their progress this summer!

Bass River Results!

At 8:00 yesterday morning, our sailors left WDYC ready for the competition at BRYC Invite. As they pushed off the dock, the breeze was very light. As they sailed out to the race course, the fog rolled in and the racers could barely see the marks! Thankfully the sun came out and burned off the fog and they successfully completed 4 races on the 420 line and 5 races on the opti line. The wind shifted to the southwest and began to build throughout the afternoon races. After arriving back at BRYC, they enjoyed a BBQ and awards ceremony. Congratulations to our sailors who brought home hardware!

Intermediate Opti: Week 4 Recap

On Monday/Thursday, due to a heavy southwest wind, the interemdiates were stuck on shore. They learned nautical flags, tightened their sail ties on their sails and composed sailing songs. Please refer to the lyrics of "Sailing at the WD" posted earlier in the week! On Tuesday and Wednesday they were back on the water, practicing mark roundings on a slalom course. They also practiced safely docking their boats. They are really coming a long way as we mark the half-point in the summer!

420-Report

Coach Ryan and the 420-A team had a competive two days at Edgartown Jr. Regatta. Due to the wind, the first day was canceled and they were forced to shop around Edgartown and enjoy Murdick's Fudge. After a nice day of rest and relaxation, they reported to Chappy early on Friday to fix boats and rig for the first day of racing. The wind was consistently blowing between 10-15. While they struggled to get off the starting line in the large fleet at the start of the day, they made the necessary adjustments to improve their racing. After a long day of 8 races, they sailed back into Chappy. On Saturday morning, they set out again for the race course. The wind was shifty throughout the day which challenged our sailors to be ready for any condition. They finished a total of 6 races on Saturday to complete the regatta (totaling 14 races). After an exhausting two days of racing, the sailors packed up the 420's and headed to Vineyard Haven to board the ferry. A BIG thank you to the Warner and Sullivan families for delivering the coach boat back to West Dennis YC. Another big thank you to the Halpern-Reiss's for delivering hardware to our 420 sailors and hosting our WDYC parents to cheer our on our sailors!

With the winds gusting to 35, the Opti fleet was canceled for day one racing at Edgartown Jr. Regatta. The WDYC racers are staying busy as they walk the streets of Edgartown eating Murdick's Fudge and Mad Martha's Ice Cream.

Coach Ryan reported that the 420 fleet is postponed until 2:00 pm. They are hoping the winds will come down so the fleet can get their first day of racing off. We will keep you posted on their day!

420-A sailors are to report to WDYC at 9:45 a.m. for a gear check. Coach Ryan will load up the car and the sailors will be leaving at 10:15 a.m.. The trailer/car is on the 12:00 p.m. ferry from Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs. Once the sailors have arrived at EYC, they will head over to Chappy to rig the boats. At 4:00 they will check-in at registration and report to their housing. Harborstart is at 10 a.m. on Thursday/Friday/Saturday. Best of luck 420-sailors.. we know you will make us proud!

Opti-A Stage Harbor Results

After a postponement and some severe thunder storms, the Opti A team faced the fog in Chatham. Five W.D. sailors, Sebastian Halpern Reiss, Jake Hawk, Ed Goggin and Matthew Sweeney in the championship fleet and C.J. McKenna in the green fleet, battled some building wind and had some great finishes. After three races on the championship line, West Dennis sailors racked up a first place finish and a second place finish as well as many top ten finishes.

On the green line C.J. came away with a second place finish, a third place finish and another top ten finish. At the end of the day WD sailors came home with some hardware! Sebastian finished fourth in red fleet, and C.J. in his first regatta finished third in the green fleet! The other West Dennis sailors also had amazing finishes, Matthew and Jake finished top ten in red fleet, and Ed finished 17th out of 38 boats in blue fleet.

Great first regatta of the season, and we look forward to great finishes at the invitational on Monday!!

Reminder- Closed-toed shoes

Breezy Sports Day!

The Beginner Opti class refreshed their memory on parts of the boat and the instructors introduced parts of the sail. They celebrated Sport's Day with basketball and soccer ball sponge races and enjoyed wearing their favorite sport's jersey and hat!

Intermediate Opti began their lesson by tacking upwind through the mooringfield. They then worked on rounding two marks focusing on sail trim. The ended the lesson, practicing their dock landings.

Beginner 420 continued to work on rigging. They practiced tiller switches on land and then went out to practice tacking.

Intermediate 420 practiced upwind sailing out into the ocean. They were excited to finally escape the river!

The Intro to Race Opti was not afraid of the wind today! They did 3 races and practiced beating upwind. They also reviewed points of sails. When the returned from practice, they practiced tiller switches on land focusing on holding the mainsheet the correct way. They ended with sailing jeopardy reviewing what they had learned from the day.

Intro to Race 420 practiced tacking/gybing on whistle. They also worked on positioning and where the crew/skipper should be sitting. It wasn't easy with the breeze but they looked great out there!

Cruising took out three prams and one 420 down the river. They attempted to do a race around Grass Island but the wind held them back from the race.

Opti Race A: Practiced tacking on the whistle to the mile marker then they refreshed their wave surfing/broad reach skills toward rock island. When returning to the club, they reviewed favored end of the lines.

Friday Race Series!

The Intro to Race Opti class is invited to join the Opti Race A/B teams for the Friday Race Series. It is not mandatory, just a fun way to practice what you learned in class on the race course!

Boats should be rigged and ready by 1:00 p.m. and it will begin tomorrow! (July 1st)

Wednesday: Seal Spotted in Bass River!

The Beginner/Intermediate Opti and 420 classes had quite the thrill as they left the club and sailed out of the river. They spotted a seal! He stayed with them throughout the morning and swam off toward the end of class. We think he successfully found his way out of the river (phew!)

Brooke Baker
Brooke is returning to us as at the Opti-A race coach for the third summer. She will be a junior at Wesleyan University in the fall where she is studying Chemisty. She is a member of the field hockey team, sailing team and crew team at WU and enjoys tutoring local elementary students in math in her spare time. She grew up sailing at WDYC on the 420/opti race teams and is excited to be back for another great summer.

Ryan Daly
Ryan will be coaching the 420-A team at WDYC this summer. He will be a sophomore at Connecticut College in the fall where he is a member of the co-ed sailing team. In addition to coaching, he will be instructing the Intermediate 420 class this summer.

Chris Warner
Chris will be coaching the 420-B team at WDYC this summer. He has sailed at St. Sebastian's the past two years of high school. Chris finished 15th overall as a skipper in SMSA Grand Prix last summer out of 174 boats. He will be attending Boston College in the fall where he plans to try-out for the BC sailing team.

Lauren Galanis
Lauren will be instructing the Sea-Squirts and Beginner Opti class this summer. She will be sophomore at Florida State University in the fall where she is studying Pre-Med. Lauren has sailed for WDYC for the past 11 years and enjoys every minute spent on Bass River. In addition to sailing, Lauren enjoys golf, skiing, attending FSU football games and giving back her time to the community.

Michael Sweeney
Michael will be leading our new Cruising class this summer. He will be a freshman at Connecticut College in the fall where he will major in International Studies and Spanish. He was the captain of the Fairfield Prep 420 race team this past year and looks forward to racing for Connecticut College in the fall.

Marissa Sullivan
Marissa will be coaching the Opti B- team this summer and instructing the intermediate 420 class. She will be a sophomore at Loyola University Maryland in the fall. She plays club lacrosse at Loyola and enjoys spending her summer sailing at WDYC. She participated in both the opti/420 race programs here at WDYC.

Kelsey Goggin
Kelsey will be coaching the Intro to Race Opti class this summer and instructing the opti intermediates. She will be a freshman at Hobart and William Smith College this fall. She has raced on the Harwich High Varsity sailing team the past four years and looks forward to sharing her racing knowledge with the WDYC sailors.

Laura Adams
Laura will be instructing the Beginner Opti's and coaching the Intro to Race class this summer. She will be a freshman at UMASS Amherst in the fall. This past Spring you may have seen Laura's face in the Cape Cod Times featured as a Rising Star for her commitment to Student Council.

Smoothe Sailing- Morning Recap

Welcome back! As the sailors reported for the first two days of sailing, their smiles showed that they were filled with excitement to get back on the water! We were lucky to have sunny weather and a light breeze. It was a great way to start our first two days of sailing.

Beginner Opt (Monday/Tuesday)i: Instructors Lauren and Laura worked on parts of the boat and rigging and de-rigging. They challenged the students to rigging races where they competed in teams against each other. The students went out sailing in the prams with the instructors right off the dock. It was amazing to see how many sailors were so confident with the tiller!

Intermediate Opti ( Monday/Tuesday): Instructors Brooke and Kelsey lead the intermediates through rigging demonstrations. They were excited to get in their boats on the first day and practice sailing upwind off the dock. Way to go intermediates!

Beginner 420 (Monday/Tuesday): Instructors Chris, Mike and Marissa reviewed how to rig the 420's. The winners of the rigging race completed their boat in 6 minutes and 20 seconds. It was very impressive! They also went out sailing with instructors in the boat to get comfortable with the 420.

Intermediate 420 (Monday) : Instructors Ryan and Marissa reviewed rigging and had rigging races. They sailed down the river to regain the feel of the boat. They also made goals for the sailing season after playing ice breaker games to get to know each other.

Cruising (Tuesday): The NEW cruising class took off on Tuesday morning in two prams and one 420. They battled the fog as they worked on tacking/gybing.

Safety is our number one goal here at WDYC.
Please follow the rules listed below.

1. Children are never allowed to run on the docks
2. Lifejackets must be worn on the dock at all times
3. There is no swimming off of the dock (unless approved by instructors)
4. All students must have whistles attached to their lifejacket

Request from instructors
1. Please DO NOT rig your child's opti! It is their responsibility to get their boat rigged each morning/afternoon for class. The junior instructors will be out on the ramp 15 minutes before class starts to assist with any heavy lifting that is needed.
2. There is no parent coaching allowed during lessons or at regattas
3. Please contact Meghan with any questions/concerns regarding your child/instr4uctpr
4. Please DO NOT interrupt the instructors during class time
5. Please pick up/drop off on time (we will issue TARDY slips!)

How you can help
1. Read the blog to stay updated on class
2. Send your child in the proper attire (rain gear when it is raining!)
3. Stay updated on theme days (send snacks/goodies)

Race Parents
1. This year we are beginning a mentor program. Each B-team parent will be assigned to an A-team parent to go to for any questions they may have.
2. There is no dropping-off at regattas
3. Each parent will have an assigned regattas for snacks/water for the coach boat

The WDYC Sailing Program will begin on Monday, June 27th. Please see the class descriptions below. The WDYC Invitational is on Monday, July 11th. There will be no classes on this day. There will be classes on Monday, July 4th

2011 Class Descriptions

Sea-Squirts: offers children ages 5 to 7 years old. These sailors will focus on the basics of sailing safety on the water. They will gain their sailing confidence and comfort in prams and the CC Knockabout.

Beginner Opti: This class is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 11. This introductory class focuses on rigging, parts of the boat, point of sail, right of way and sailing safety on the water.

Intermediate Opti: Offered for sailors who have successfully completed beginner opti and have been recommended for intermediate. They focus on independent sailing, points of sail, right of way, wind direction and sailing a triangle. Intermediate sailors MUST own their own Optimist Pram to participate in class.

Intro to Opti Racing: This class is for new opti racers. These sailors will be green fleet. They will be introduced to the basic concepts of Racing.

New Intro to Opti Racing: This class is for new opti racers. These sailors will be green fleet. They will be introduced to the basic concepts of Racing. Must Take intro. before race team A or B.

Opti Race B: Returning race team members who will focus on sharpening their boat handling and race tactics. They will work on the racing rules and course sailing. All Sailors MUST be white, blue or red fleet.

Opti Race A: Sailors who are recommended to the A team. These sailors will competitively race and attend regattas recommended by the sailing director. These sailors MUST be white, blue or red fleet.

420 Beginner: For older children at least 12 years old who will sail mainly 420s. This class will cover the basics to sailing along with skippering, crewing, knot tying, rigging, basic rules of ways, and safety.

Intermediate 420: This course builds on what sailors have learned in the Optimist groups and 420 Beginner group. Sailors will sharpen their skills with advanced drills and enhance their knowledge of right of way rules, spinnaker/trapeze, and navigation.

New Cruising: This class is designed for sailors who are not interested in racing. And have finished 2 full seasons of WDYCSS program. Sailors must be 10 years old. This class focus on weather, tides, current, basic navigation and rules of the road on the water

New Intro 420 racing: This class is for sailors that have successfully completed the Opti Race Program and are new to 420 racing. The class will begin with rigging and move quickly to 420 racing tactics.

420 Race B: This team is for sailors who have been recommended to participate in the 420 race program. The class is limited to 8 sailors and will attend local regattas.

420 Race A: This competitive team will be required to attend all practice and regattas. This team requires the necessary dedication to travel and race all summer long.

A BIG congratulations to WDYC 420 sailors who brought home the hardware from the HYC Invite today! Skipper Chris Warner and crew Laura Adams WON the regatta with three 1st place finishes and a 2nd!! Skipper Nick Arabia and Kelsey Goggin finished in 3rd place overall for the regatta! WAY TO GO 420 SAILORS WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

This morning, the beginner and intermediate 420 and opti classes participated in the annual WDYC Pirate Day Treasure Hunt! They were decked out in bandannas, skulls and black eyes and looked fantastic. They began the treasure hunt on land and ended up at boaters beach digging for the treasure box. Everyone had a fun filled morning filled with sailing memories :)

420-B Race Updates

Bass River

Last Wednesday, the 420-B team headed down the river for the Bass River 420 Challenge. The breeze was up, and by the time we sailed over to BRYC, a number of our boats had already capsized, so we knew we were in for a challenging day of sailing. The wind continued to pick up throughout the morning, so the race course was set in the river instead of out in the ocean. Our sailors were excited to get out there and practice their heavy-wind sailing skills that we’ve been practicing throughout the summer, so without hesitation, they sailed out on the whitecap-filled river. After the first race, the wind continued to pick up, and during the second race, there were gusts up to 30 knots! All of the sailors started to have trouble keeping control of the boats, and after some gnarly capsizes, the race committee called off the rest of racing for the day. It was a short day of racing, but the team had a lot of fun, and Sean O’Sullivan and Alexis Hamel won the sportsmanship award!

Belle of the West

This past Friday, the 420-B team crossed to the other side of the cape to sail at the Belle of the West regatta at Dennis Yacht Club. Unfortunately, the wind did not cooperate, and the team spent most of the day drifting around the course, hoping for the wind to fill in. They managed to get two races off, and our sailors did a great job of staying focused and keeping their heads in the game. It was a challenge just to keep the boats moving forward with such a light breeze, but all six of our boats finished the races with smiles on their faces. Mac Halpern-Reiss and Cooper Klosowski were even awarded the sportsmanship award at the end of the day!

Sea-Bass Represents WDYC at Opti New Englands!

Sebastian Halpern-Reiss left for Newport on Monday to represent WDYC in Opti New Englands. After nine races, he was in 220 out of 321 boats overall. He also finished 92 out of 151 boats in the blue fleet. He is sailing against opti racers from all over the world. WAY TO GO SEA-BASS!!!

Hyannis Port Invite and Wianno Opti Regatta

HPYC Invite

Last Thursday the Opti race team traveled to Hyannis port for a windy and wavy day on the water. The day brought gusts to 20 knots and huge waves, but the sailors completed a series of three races. West Dennis had a strong showing with one sailor in the green fleet and five sailors in the championship fleet. We ended the day on a good note when our own Brad Seferian won the final race! Brad ended up in third place overall and third in red fleet. Congratulations to Otilia, Eddy, Carly, Brett and Katie for their participation.

Wianno Opti Regatta

Last week the Opti race teams traveled to Wianno for a SMSA grand prix event. With the winds gusting above 25, it was challenging task just getting beach. Thankfully with the support of our Opti parents we were able to get all our boats pushed off the ramp. Wednesday was a crazy day and they finished one race in the ocean and another three races inside Cotuit Bay. One race was an “around the island” distance race. Thursday was another great day and we stayed inside North Bay. The WDYCrace team did a great job of completing the races in shifty breeze. Way to go WDYC racers, you represented us well!

After two final races today, Kelsey Goggin and Nick Arabia finished 4th overall at Scituate Jr. Regatta! They had an impressive first place finish in race 5 which was very exciting! Matthew Sweeney and Jake Hawk also represented WDYC well at Scituate! Matthew finished 6th in blue fleet and 9th overall. Jake finished 8th in blue fleet and 11th overall, way to go boys!

It's hard to believe we are in the month of August already! There are only three weeks left of the program and our students are showing great improvement in all aspects of their sailing. Today the beginner opti full season sailors were sailing SOLO! They practiced a triangle and learned about starboard and port tacks. They were very impressive. While the beginners were hard at work, the intermediates practiced sailing a triangle in the ocean. Way to go intermediate's!

The 420 beginner class worked on a triangle course, upwind sailing and jibing. Ryan is very pleased with their progress! Chris and Mildred focused on upwind sailing with the intermediate 420's. As the afternoon approached, the breeze picked up and the 420-B team had the opportunity to work on their starts. They will be traveling to the Bass River Challenge Cup on Wednesday. We wish them the best of luck. The opti race team will be traveling over to the Hyannisport Invite tomorrow. They also practiced their starts today in anticipation for tomorrow! Sail fast WDYC racers!

As things were busy at WDYC, we had six of our sailors racing at the Scituate Jr. Regatta. The 420 sailors representing WDYC were: Nick Arabia/Kelsey Goggin and Michael Sweeney/Katie Galanis. There are 43 boats on the line and after the first day, Kelsey and Nick are in 3rd place! Woo-ho! We also had Matthew Sweeney and Jake Hawk on the opti line. Matthew is in 10th and Jake is in 11th after the first day!

HYC Regatta

Over the weekend we sent three 420's to the Hyannis Yacht Club regatta. Usually HYC regatta brings winds gusting to 30 mph but that all changed this year! The first two days of the regatta brought light breeze of 5-7. We had some very frustrated sailors in the 101 boat fleet. They were competing against sailors from all over the world in this open regatta. They sailed against teams from Chicago, Annapolis, Bermuda, Ft. Lauderdale and many others!

We also want to extend a BIG congratulations to 420-A Coach Mildred Conroy for her debut appearance in her new J-22. She placed 2nd overall in the regatta!! She raced against many experienced J-22 sailors and blew them away with her racing talent. She had Opti-A coach Brooke Baker aboard as crew so make sure to congratulate her as well! Patrick Hession, Ali Love and DJ Hatch also sailed fast on the 420 line! Way to go WDYC coaches!

We also had one WDYC opti sailor compete at Hyannis! Congratulations to blue fleet sailor, Ryan Vittimberga for his participation in the 3 day event. He sailed against opti racers from all over the country and had a great time out there. Way to go Mythbuster!
